Violence and Dignity

Lecture Talk by Abhishek Majumdar

Abhishek Majumdar is a playwright, theatre director, teacher and actor based in Bangalore and currently a Visiting Fellow at the Department of English, University of Delhi. Abhishek graduated in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Delhi. He has a Master’s Degree from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy. He writes in English, Hindi, and Bangla. He is currently the artistic director of the Indian Ensemble. His first play was Pratidwandi, an adaptation of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Bangla novella, followed by Niharika and Lucknow 76 which were original works. Other works include An Arrangement of Shoes, Rizwaan, The Afterlife of Birds, and Pah-la. Abhishek has received various scholarships and grants in the field of theatre, including the Charles Wallace Scholarship and the Inlaks Scholarship for 2008-2009. He is a graduate of LISPA (London International School of Performing Arts) and has also trained at Yatrik, Mahesh Dattani’s Studio, and done the workshop at AdiShakti Theatre Lab. Abhishek is a member of the Young Vic Director’s Network, London and the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab 2012, New York.

Ali Ahmed works with an international organization on security and political issues. He is the author of India’s Doctrine Puzzle: Limiting War in South Asia (Routledge, 2014), On War in South Asia, and On Peace in South Asia (both Cinnamon Teal, 2014), and India’s National Security in the Liberal Lens (Cinnamon Teal 2016). He blogs at https://ali-writings.blogspot.in/ and has written extensively on military doctrines, strategy, and security issues.

Infrastructure, gender and violence: the case of sanitation in Indian cities

Susan Chaplin is an Independent researcher who is currently dividing her time between Australia and India. Her research interests include urban sanitation policies in India (particularly in relation to the urban poor), community natural disaster communication and responses, climate change and displacement in South Asia and the social determinants of health in India and Australia. In 2011 she published The Politics of Sanitation in India: Cities, Services and the State (Orient Black Swan, New Delhi).
